Rodentia is an order of mammals also known as rodents, characterised by two continuously-growing incisors in the upper and lower jaws which must be kept short by gnawing.

Common rodents to Australia are rats and mice.

Rats

Rats are various medium sized rodents.  Rats are distinguished from mice by their size; rats gernerally have bodies longer than 12cm.

The best-known rat species are the Black Rat and the Brown Rat.  The group is generally known as the Old World rats or tru rats, and originated in Asia.

A typical rat will be 15cm to 20cm long with a further 20cm of tail.  The Black Rat is nocturnal and omnivorous, with a preference for grains.

Mice

A mouse (plural mice) is a rodent that belongs to one of numerous species of small mammals.  The best known mouse species is the common house mouse.  It is found in nearly all countries and, like the laboratory mouse, serves as an important model organism in biology, and is also a popular pet.

The average mouse in the wild only lives about 5 months, primarily due to heavy predation.

Mice can be harmful pests, damaging and eating crops and spreading diseases through their parasire and feces.

Mice are small rodents, resembling diminutive rats.  they usually have pointed snouts and small ears.  The body is typically elongated with slender, usually hairless tails, but different types of mice show large variations.  Body dimension
